One of the new properties of Autocad 2008 is cutting the dimension lines crosswise. The technique that we used for the drawings do not fit onto a plot is included in Autocad 2008. As you know, I am used to enter the commands via keyboard. In fact, this speeds up the drawing. But new Autocad users prefers icon menu to draw. Thus I am giving the icon for the command first.
The command is DIMJOGLINE. Let us get busy with its function: read more...

SmartPurger can be used to help you detect drawings that has been created or saved by an Educational (Student and Faculty) version of AutoCAD® or AutoCAD-based software.
Why would you like to find these? PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT will be added along all four edges of any plot of these drawings. If one or more drawings with this stamp is circulating among your non educational drawings you might end up with getting more and more drawings affected. This can happen if you attach an xref or insert a drawing as block. If the xref or block has the stamp the host drawing will get it too. read more...

JTB FlexReport is a reporting tool that can help you analyze the usage of your network licenses.
The major news in this release of JTB FlexReport are:
* FLEXnet license denial notifications. You can get automatic emails sent when license requests are denied. The information on the denials are also saved to the database so they are available for study.
* Support for applications like 12d Model from 12D Solutions.
* The latest JTB FlexReport Detailed Reports.mdb must be downloaded separately if you upgrade an existing installation or you can rename JTB FlexReport Detailed Reports.mdb before installing.
* Groups defined in the detailed report are now correctly saved to the JTBFlexReport.NET.mdb again. For help to migrate the groups contact us.
* For other fixes and news see the Revision History on the website.
Existing customers should contact us for a new license file before installing. The license file should be located in the installation folder. read more...

There is no doubt that the most important difference of Autocad from any other CAD software is its various tools of customization and automation. Some macro programmes can be written and managed in Autocad to ease the routine works. Although VBA (Visual Basic Application) has the whole control, loop etc. mechanisms of Basic Language, it lacks some options compared to the other versions of Visual Basic. The one who knows even a little about Basic Language and/or uses one of Visual Basic IDE can get used to VBA for Autocad very easily. read more...

Having started to my first article about DCL, I am just thinking how I can teach you easy and fast user interface programming technique. This is why I am going to make some explanations about OpenDCL package, also known as OpenSource Software which is very popular nowadays. Almost any form of AEC/O information–based activity — document transmission, storage, retrieval, mark up, routing, workflow, review, approval, and so on — that can be performed in the physical world can now be performed by a range of online means and services.
Knowing which type of online service or technology is most appropriate can be a challenge. In this month's "AEC Insight" column, I'll examine many of the alternatives and some of the trade-offs to consider in choosing among them. read more...

Good article by Robert Green:
"..most companies I work with have less control over their data than I did back then. These companies have never had that "we've got to manage our data" moment that I experienced so long ago. Apparently, it's time to revisit document management and demonstrate why this problem is still so vexing and why managing your files is a valid concern." read more...

I received a question about how to replace one block with another block. Replacing blocks is useful for 3 reasons:
* To create multiple versions of a drawing, each with a different block. For example, you could try out a floor plan with different desks.
* When your company replaces one part with another part
* If your drawing is very complex, to reduce regeneration time, by replacing a complex block with a simpler one. Of course, before plotting, you would reverse the replacement.
There are two methods to replace one block with another. read more...
